When the World Health Assembly’s 194 members unanimously adopted a resolution earlier this year calling for universal access to water, sanitation, and hygiene in hospitals and other health facilities, it was a critical step forward for patients and staff; and tackling antimicrobial resistance and disease prevention.

Transforming health service quality through improved water, sanitation & hygiene: from Resolution to Revolution

A presentation given at the Prince Mahidol Award Conference, Bangkok, Thailand (January 2020). The presentation was given as part of a session hosted by WHO, WaterAid and the National Public Health Institute of Cambodia. The session objectives were to:

  1. Discuss key entry points and strategies for jointly addressing quality and WASH in health care facilities and the added benefits of such an approach.
  2. How linkages between national quality policy and strategy and WASH in health facilities were used to drive action: experiences in Bangladesh, Cambodia, India and the Philippines.
  3. Orient participants to recent WASH and quality tools (including quality implementation guide, WASH FIT[1]) and how they can be adapted to support participants to engage in quality and WASH improvements.

WHO and UNICEF held a short webinar on 26th November 2019 to provide an update on progress following the 2019 global meeting on WASH in health care facilities,. The webinar also featured the Government of Zambia talking about their recent activities. Further webinars will be held in 2020. Details will be shared on this site.
