The Global WASH in Healthcare Facilities Community of Practice, WHO, and UNICEF hosted a webinar on the “Global Framework for Action” on WASH in healthcare facilities on the 6th of August. The webinar is available online. The session featured a detailed presentation by WHO/UNICEF, highlighting the significance of the Global Framework and its critical role in driving progress on WASH in healthcare settings worldwide. The webinar also included insightful case studies from the Philippines and Nepal. Representatives from the Philippines presented their “Green and Safe Health Facilities Strategic Plan 2030,” showcasing innovative approaches to creating environmentally sustainable and safe healthcare environments. Meanwhile, representatives from Nepal shared their experiences on leadership engagement for improving healthcare waste management, underscoring the importance of strong leadership in achieving sustainable WASH outcomes. High Level Ministerial luncheon on WASH in Health care facilities-WHA77
Honourable Khumbize Kandodo Chiponda, the Minister of Health in Malawi, hosted a high-level ministerial luncheon on WASH in health care facilities in Geneva on May 30, 2024. The event was attended by representatives from Liberia, Zambia, Zimbabwe, the Republic of Tanzania, The Gambia, and Japan along with partners from SIDA. Discussions at the meeting centered around reviewing outcomes and priority actions related to IPC, WASH, waste management, and electricity provision in health care facilities. Additionally, participants discussed identifying critical linkages to enhance climate resilience and improve services in health care facilities. Find the presentation here!
Strategic roundtable on WASH, waste and electricity in health care facilities (Presentations)
The Global Strategic Roundtable on WASH, waste, and electricity in health care facilities brought together key stakeholders to discuss the UN General Assembly Resolution and the WHO/UNICEF 2024-2030 Global Framework for Action. The event focused on integrated implementation, investment, and leadership. Attended by 45 in-person and 25 online participants, the roundtable included representatives from Hungary, Nepal, the Philippines, Tanzania, multi-lateral and global health agencies, donors, NGOs, and civil society. Technical webinar series: WASH FIT
WHO and UNICEF hosted a practitioners’ webinar on use and scale-up of WASH FIT on the 21st of November 2023. Nearly 100 individuals participated from all regions of the world. Just over half had used WASH FIT with the remainder looking to learn how to start with WASH FIT in their countries and secure technical and financial support. Plumbing Aspects of Healthcare facilities in Philippines-WPC 2023 in Shanghai
The topic of safe and resilient water and sanitation systems and plumbing in health care facilities was an important focus of the recent 2023 World Plumbing Council Congress, an organization in official relations with WHO, was held in Shanghai, China. In the preliminary opening, Arabella Hayter (WHO HQ) highlighted recent findings from the Global Progress Report on WASH, waste and electricity in health care facilities and the need to continue to integrate with health systems monitoring, programming and financing. The example of climate resilient WASH standards and wide-scale implementation of WASH FIT was highlighted by the presentation by Boni Magtibay (WHO Philippines). Find the presentation here!
