This case study explores the knowledge and practices of health surveillance assistants operating at rural village health clinics in Ntcheu District, Malawi, with regard to the collection, segregation, transportion, treatment, and disposal of healthcare waste. Preliminary results from a survey of health care facilities conducted by SNV in 16 cities across 5 countries (Bangladesh, Indonesia, Nepal, Tanzania and Zambia). 366 facilities were surveyed in total.

The document provides guidance on solid and liquid hazardous and non-hazardous health care waste as well as gaseous emissions along the complete logistic chain: procurement, generation, segregation, collection, storage, transport, treatment and disposal.

Millennium Water Alliance in partnership with Stanford University organized meetings and workshops in Addis Ababa to present the findings of a WASH in HCF assessment in Ethiopia, analyze the root causes of poor WASH services in HCFs and brainstorm potential impactful solutions.

This success story presents the implementation of the “Clean Clinic Approach” (CCA) for strengthening water, sanitation, and hygiene (WASH) in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), where MCSP worked in partnership with the Ministry of Health (MOH) from 2015. The CCA aims to increase access to WASH services whilst improving adherence to best practices at the community and health facility level to reduce the risk of healthcare associated infections (HAI). The MOH and MCSP worked together to improve the quality of health services and outcomes in two provincial health divisions (DPS) of north-western DRC: Bas-Uélé and Tshopo.
